THE FOCAL POINT

The focal point is one of the most fundamental elements of successful interior design in your luxury home. It’s the first thing that viewers’ eyes naturally see when they enter the room and it’s the emphasis point around which you build the rest of your layout. With that in mind, it’s important to make sure you’ve chosen the right eye-catching spot for this setting. Mastering this step can make a huge difference in the overall presentation of your luxury high-end home.

BUILT-IN FOCAL POINTS

You want to highlight the best feature of your room. Each room naturally has a built-in focal point; from there you can construct the room’s layout. Some examples of a focal point include:

Vaulted ceilings

A common feature in the open room design of many Naples and Boca Raton homes, the majestic upward angle of a vaulted ceiling naturally draws the eye. While they don’t seem to initially require much in terms of design, do make sure they stay freshly painted and include a bold, eye-catching light fixture.

Fireplaces

Even if you only use the fireplace during the colder months, it can still work as an eye-catching center of the room. Be sure to arrange a seating area around the fire and, if possible, place a striking piece of art above the mantle.

Built-in shelving

Many times, built-in shelving and fireplaces go hand-in-hand. Even if that’s not the case, the process is still fairly similar. Start by creating a seating area in front of the shelving and be sure to purposely style your surfaces so they’re aesthetically pleasing.

Windows and outdoor views

Use that gorgeous tropical Florida landscaping outside to your advantage. Views — especially eye-catching ones — are an easy choice for a focal point. Regardless of the room’s interior, eyes naturally travel there. All you need to do is allow the windows to be as big and unobscured as possible.

Interestingly angled walls

Consider making this wall a focal point by using a different color to create an accent wall or, if applicable, playing up a feature like a window seat.

CREATE YOUR OWN FOCAL POINT

Should you desire a different focal point in the layout of a particular room in your Naples or Boca Raton home, there are several options to use to your advantage.

Artwork

A statement piece of artwork or mirror in your luxury high-end home can command the eye and carry a room by itself. Make sure the statement art piece you choose is big enough to suit the wall it’s placed on. Position it at eye-level and, whenever possible, add accent lighting to highlight the piece even further.

Backsplashes

Kitchens and bathrooms have their own standards for focal points, and it’s obviously a tile backsplash. Behind either the vanity or stove, a bold colored or patterned backsplash can command the room.

Accent walls

Accent walls are an easy and popular option which to make your own focal point. If there are no built-in features to work with, then an accent wall can be created on the furthest wall from the entry into the room. Be sure to use a bold paint color or patterned wallpaper to draw attention, and accessorize accordingly.

Statement furniture

A large, statement piece of furniture can also serve as a fine focal point. This is typically the case in dining rooms and bedrooms, where there is obviously a central piece of furniture in the room. Add accents to this room in your Naples or Boca Raton home like a centerpiece for the table or some throw pillows on the bed to help draw the eye.

Keep in mind to avoid creating more than one focal point in the room, as it could potentially confuse guests. Each room should have once central focus. Don’t forget to frame the area by adding extra details to really make the focal point pop, and lighting is always key.
